Long Beach artist Akinsanya Kambon tells us the story behind a painting he created of a fellow Marine soldier in the Vietnam War called "Detroit Blue."

Kambon was born in Sacramento, CA. Stricken by polio in his childhood, he found refuge in art. In 1966 he was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps where he served on tour of duty in the Vietnam War. Although illiterate in his youth, he persevered to earn a Masters Degree in Fine Arts from California State University, Fresno.

He was recently featured in HBO's war documentary, "Wartorn 1861- 2010." This movie featured the invisible wounds of war and how it affects soldiers. (‪http://www.hbo.com/documentaries/wartorn-1861-2010/index.html‬)

His view of the world is colored by his experiences living in the United States, his Vietnam tour of military duty, and his extensive travels throughout Africa.

In 1984, he founded Pan African Art located in Long Beach, CA. This non-profit organization promotes academic achievement, understanding history, and self expression through art.
