A New Marketplace for Petionville

The Haitian government has announced the opening of a newly constructed marketplace at "Chalaska" Petion-ville located on Route de Frere. The 4,000 sq. ft. facility was officially inaugurated on March 8th, 2008.

The marketplace has 2 floors and can house up to 9000 merchants. It is equipped with an administrative office and other facilities. The construction, which began in 1996, came to a halt due to political constraints after President Aristide's departure. The marketplace was in great need due to the overcrowding in the streets of Petionville and the hope is that this will result in giving Petionville back its beautiful appearance of the early 80's.

The Haitian Government noted that completion of the Mache La Coupe marks a major phase of the government's goal to construct organized marketplaces in Port-au-Prince. They added that these regional markets will be very effective in controlling the taxes due to the commune that will be distributed to affect other needed underfunded sectors of the community.
