What if Star Trek: The Motion Picture was an episode of the classic series? Here's the third segment of my fan edit.

I should add that despite the cuts, I am a fan of the original movie flaws and all, and I have the deepest respect for Robert Wise and all the creative people that put their hearts and souls into the project. This is best described as a "what if?" exercise.
As many of you know, Decker and Ilia were originally supposed to be ongoing characters in the series, and they were the templates for the later characters of Riker and Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation. What is interesting to me is that in both this movie and in TNG's opening episode this relationship is not very well defined, which is again probably a leftover from the TV concept. In pilots, you establish the conflict but leave many questions open so they can be explored in the series. We really didn't understand Dee and Will in TNG until the third season. Unfortunately, Ilia and Decker don't hang around long enough for us to get to know them.
Ilia (specifically the non-robot Ilia) does get short shrift in the movie, and that is exacerbated in this cut as I focus more on the relationship with Kirk and Decker. This makes Decker's act of self sacrafice at the end a bit harder to understand, but it also spares the viewer from the "oath of celibacy" scene which was awkward and odd even in the 1970's!
