The tsunami siren woke me at about 3 am. At first I thought it was police or ambulance sirens and that there must have been an accident nearby. It kept on for so long I began to realize there was some other emergency. I called my neighbor and he said "Turn on your TV, there's been a huge earthquake in Japan and we are having a tsunami alert." I live about a mile and a half from the ocean and he said when he called the police they said that we did not need to evacuate. But I was visualizing tsunamis I'd see on TV so I got my 2 dogs and left in the car. I headed into Florence, where I saw a line more than a block long for the pumps at what might be the only gas station open at that time of night. I drove out 126 to Mapleton, realizing I might need to get away from the river because it would be effected too. Beyond Mapleton I pulled into the Gingerbred Man Restaurant and listened to the news on the car radio. First they were talking about people in Hawaii in hotels who were going up to the 8th floor for safety, and they weren't sure how severe the tsunami would be. The restaurant, surrounded by wilderness next to the Siuslaw River, turned on it's lights and someone waved a coffeepot out the front door. Many of us went in to get some coffee. I walked my dogs and kept listening to the news. When it was safe to go home I drove out to the overlook at Heceta Lighthouse to make a video of the Tsunami wave action and surges.

It's about 10 miles north of Florence, on the Oregon Central Coast, with Heceta Head Lighthouse in the background. Often that beach is filled with sea lions, and the famous Sea Lion Caves are about a mile or 2 south.

Thanks for reporting. I can't believe what happened in Japan, but to think if that ever happened to Oregon... The Oregon coast is my baby. Anyways, that's some surge. Is there still an advisory warning down there?
