@dennbb, exactly. It's annoying when you hear people making sweeping claims such as "Dempsey wouldn't fight Wills because he was black" without understanding the nature of the times and also without knowing about the situation in depth. Dempsey signed to fight Wills twice but after the Jeffries-Johnson riots in 1910, Rickard was reluctant to stage a title fight with a black fighter. Also, after Shelby was bankrupted by Gibbons-Dempsey, no major city / venue would entertain a Wills-Dempsey fight.

He didn't even get his facts straight., Dempsey signed to fight Wills but the NY comission refused to let him defend his title against a black fighter. He would have been stripped of his title so it would have been a non title fight anyway. The best heavyweight of all time is a matter of opinion and not the same as the greatest hw of all time. To say Dempsey and Marciano are myths is just rediculous. As is Louis having a bad chin. Buddy Bear Knocked him over the top rope. He got up and won!

Man, these guys don't know boxing. Jack Dempsey and Marciano myths? He knocks on Jeffries for just what Johnson did. Also, they say Dempsey was "afraid" to fight Harry Wills. HA! Wills would have not stood no chance. Wills was too big, slow, had to struggle with Firpo and lost to Sharkey, and even Sam Langford, who was afraid of Jeffries said Jack was way better. These guys seem to know the bare minimum and the suppsoed "Facts" which aren't true, like Joe Louis having a abd chin.
