Barbadian folklore at its best, captured here in true Calypso style. The Merrymen's "Steel Donkey" tells a tale of the mythical creature which was thought to haunt certain parts of the island, getting up to mischief. Do you remember this song?

I remember as a kid in Barbados one of the local residents was thought to have a steel donkey. I remember avoiding going past that house -- or passing it house very quickly. The power of folklore on an impressionable kid.

This is the kind of music that made Barbados great, I heard of the steel donkey as a boy but never saw it....... However the lyrics made me laugh till i cry!!!!! The Merrymen are a true classic.

This ia real island of Barbados to me. It is the music I first heard when I came to the island as a little kid. I remember I was fasinated and terrified of the steel donkey all at the same time. Love those early years of innocence!
