James Kalm slips into the Madison Avenue branch of the Gagosian Gallery to bring viewers unauthorized video of one of the seasons most controversial exhibitions. End of an Era may be a cynical ploy by Hirst to vaccinate himself from complaints of his promotion of overly conspicuous consumption. Whether a preserved bulls head, or a gold plated cabinet with nearly 30,000 manufactured diamonds, the presentation of ostentation is the apparent point of Hirsts latest body of work.

  • Damien Hirst that is.

  • I can't find anyone that puts on a better art show than Damien Gift!!!! He is successful because his is the best at creating simple art with a universal message. So it sells......big deal!!!!!

  • I like Damien hirst's work but it is just becoming commercialist and repetitive, its loosing its apeal.

  • "don't hate the player, hate the game" comes to my mind when i think of his art.....he is just trying his best to make the most flashy pieces of crap that rich folks can buy.....

and his success is showing us how some parts of society work....it's a all a big bubble!

  • @seemorgrillz He's not connecting with anybody...the skull was purchased by a group of investors who (in large part) included Hirst himself. It's all smoke and mirrors. Also, not sure if you've ever talked with any of these collectors...they haven't a clue about the commodification angle...they just see the money exchanging hands (or seeming to exchange hands) and want in...meanwhile Damien just keeps cranking out skulls and butterflies.

  • @seemorgrillz , The rich only buy his work to show off , or because next door owns one that cost 2 million so they buy one that cost 3 million , it has nothing to do with loving a piece of Art work. It's a Joke & it stinks , Van Gough , Van Vliet, Picasso are what I call Artist . just because something gets a reaction it doesn't make it Art I could paint CUNT on a canvas it would shock some people but that doesn't make it Art, these people resort to these antics as they have nothing el

  • @strawwoodclaw I think you've missed the point of Hirst work, or maybe you've actually nailed it. His work is 100% about commodification and consumption, and he's not trying to hide that, his skull was called "for the love of god". And you say he's not connecting to anyone? Well he certainly has connected with all the rich sob's that buy his work. Oh and by your tone, he's definitely made some sort of a connection with you ;)

  • @HAPPYBEARSOLUTIONS I'll buy stupidity and conspicuous consumption...power and lust is giving the work way too much credit...
