Traction motor and computer unit for a modern Mitsubishi H-GPS4 series elevator, Running at inspection speeds but is rated for 60M/min. (technician is driving car down via remote-control).

Nowadays most of the elevator components (traction motor, door driver) are running on three phase, 10KHz power at variable voltages; this is controlled by digital computer. It's called VVVF, for variable voltage and frequency. This is NOT a DC motor as I previously understood.

Input power is 220VAC single-phase, transformed up to 400 VAC before entering the system (which changes power output as needed).

Other than the sound of the ventilation fan (the computer circuit cabinet) and the occasional sound of the brakes, the only sound from the traction motor is a high frequency (10KHz) hum. There are inspection controls in the cabinet, as well as three LED digit displays displaying current floor and operation status (stop, up/down, etc). Apart from several "Mitsubishi" chips, an Intel 80386 CPU is at the core of its processing power. The motherboard equipment is not unlike a PC case or server, but there are voltage coils underneath. The motherboard will be covered by a vented panel when the car is due for service.

  • thanks... I am not really an electrician or an elevator technician and I welcome this knowledge...

for this elevator, the door drive is also modulated at triple-phase high frequency power :-)

  • I'd like to note that the 10kHz frequency is not the analogue frequency to the 60Hz the motor is driven by. It means that a pulsating current of 10kHz is modulated with 0...around 10 or 100Hz or something. And that's the frequency the motor's speed depends on. :o)

Nice video by the way, thanks a lot!
