I confuse myself pretty easy, so I always go toward the spool, whether on the fly reel (for a loop on the backing) or towards a spool of spectra or whatever. That way, the line below where I first start my #3 wire toward the spool will always be the tag end that will go into the inside of the main line. I can slide the loop any size I want to, and it won't change the length of the tag end, and the line will alternate from outside to inside. Don't waste any line that way either.
