I had never hard of Rita Hunter until I got some bootlegged cassettes of her Torovatore performance where she replaced Arroyo and wow! I played them to pieces and spliced them together and dubbed em and finally presved em on cd's which some creep stole from me. I never forgot her how sad she never got the attention and acclaim she merited. Great artist! Are there any commercial recordings of her available?
What would the opera houses of her day have done without her? A golden voice and temperament. Totally reliable. Terribly underrated. May she rest in peace.
I just realised that today is the anniversary of when this wonderful lady left this world. Thanks for all you have taught me. My thoughts are with you 'dearest'....you know who you are :o)
I saw Rita in a concert performance of Electra in Sydney.. She walked on humongous in a red gown with a huge winged collar and everyone laughed at her size... She sang that role and at the finish we were all on our feet screaming and stamping our feet in sheer joy at what she had done...I heard her many times in Australia and I have to say she was one of the best.
I saw every one of these Trovatore's, she was stupendous but the tenors she sang with in this was really awful but we did have Norman Bailey and the great Copley production . She stepped in for Arroyo in this with Bergonzi as Manrico and boy was that something at the ROH , the tape of that is wonderful.
How lovely to hear Ms Hunter again. Wonderful voice and a lovely warm person. I cannot resist telling the story of when she sang Tosca with Remedios and in her jump from the battlements landed with a great crash. Remedios called to her "Are you all right my old Scouse darling"
I had the privilege and the intense excitement of seeing Rita Hunter sing Leonora at ENO...I took her a huge bunch of mimosa in the interval, "Oh," she said, beaming, "my favourites...they threw bunches on to the stage when I sang at Nice." She was a lovely person, so warm and friendly. She deserved better; she was one of the true greats - a fabulous, emotion filled voice and a truly wonderful person. I'm sure she's leading the singing 'up there' - I hope so!

She had a lot of practice with Brunhilde's battle cry to perfect the trill...A little more fortissimo though!!
