On April 30, 2011, The Tampa Bay Dragon Boat Institute teamed up with the Asian American Coalition of Florida to host the 28th Annual Asian Fest in conjunction with the 8th Annual Tampa Bay International Dragon Boat Races on the waters of the Garrison Channel in downtown Tampa, FL.

Over 140 local corporate and community groups as well as paddlers from across the United States competed to be Tampa's number one Dragon Boat team. Executive Director Christine Canaverie led the morning off with a Captain's meeting and maintained a smooth transition for the teams throughout the day with the assistance of fellow Dragon Boat Race Board Members.

A special ceremony is held mid-day to honor breast cancer survivors and to acknowledge the FACTors Breast Cancer Support Program at the Moffit Cancer Center & The Florida Aquarium. Both entities are non-profit organizations and serve the Tampa Bay community in immediate, material and lasting ways!

Congratulations to the Pink Ladies crew from winning the 2011 Breast Cancer Survivor Cup. The day was a huge success as the Red Dragons Miami took home first place with a time of 1:46.52 seconds.

Asian-American Affairs Liaison for Hillsborough County, Kimi Springsteen led the entertainment celebrations in recognition of the National Asian Pacific American Heritage month, which has been held in Tampa since 1982.

Thanks to the creative ideas and dreams of a group of business men and women led by Kevin Burns and Keith Greminger, the Dragon Boat Races were officially put into motion the fall of 1999. Tom Stork, President of the Florida Aquarium and Troy Manthey, President of Downtown Tampa Attractions Association, this event would not be possible thanks to their sponsorship efforts in our community.

This year marks another distinguished recognition for the Tampa Bay area as we host the 10th International Dragon Boat Federation World Championship; Tampa is the second United States city to ever host an international event.

A special thanks and support goes out to David Nelson and his youth team, the Dragon Riders!
