Len "Boogsie" Sharpe on the PHI.
Len "Boogsie" Sharpe has recorded an Album on the PHI as a tribute to the Mighty Sparrow.Rose is the first release of eleven (11) tracks arranged and performed by Len "Boogsie" Sharpe using the PHI(Percussive Harmonic Instrument). David Chow performed the recording and sound engineering on the project, editing and drum programming by Adrian Jaikaran. Mixing was performed by Maarten Manmohan at Random Design Studios, Mastering by Martin "Mice" Raymond, Champion Sound Mastering Studios.
The PHI allows a panist such as, Boogsie to record and score music as easily as a keyboardist on a keyboard synthesizer. This approach removes many of the difficulties associated with the recording of acoustic instruments as well as provides the artiste with unsurpassed flexibility in the choice of tones, editing and post processing.
The 36 notes of the PHI are laid out in the circle of 4ths and 5ths tenor pan, often referred to as the spider-web layout. The standardized note layout and ergonomic design of the PHI enables panists, such as Len "Boogsie" Sharpe to make an effortless transition to the instrument, access infinite tones and any range of steelpan. The PHI creates limitless opportunities for the Panist!
To me it sounds like a well tuned, properly played pan. It probably won't give you that "pang-ing " sound that a steel pan would if the notes are not played in the proper manner

Yes the sound is clear and clean. I find the traditional pan a bit noisy (personal taste) - no offense to the true pan lovers.

Love the sound. It would be interesting to hear what the equivalent sound is on the traditional pan.
