@GhostOfJulesVerne White LEDs need about 2v to 3v to light at full power. That's just an ordinary 3v battery, and these don't put out that much current.
And since the LEDs are connected in series, and operating at about 1/2 of the voltage they'd need for full brightness, they'll work OK for a long time.

Your LEDs won't last long if you don't put a resistor in series with them as well.
