Taliban levy jazia on minorities (Sikhs) in Pakistan (Aaj Tak News)

Sikhs living in Pakistans Orakzai Agency have reportedly paid Rs 20 million as jazia to the Taliban, a tax previously levied by Mughal rulers on non-Muslims to exempt them from military service and protect their person in the sub-continent.

The Daily Times, a Pakistani newspaper, reported on Thursday that detained Sikh leader Sardar Saiwang Singh was released by the Taliban, who also vacated the communitys houses occupied by them.

Sikhism in Pakistan

Nationwide, there are no reliable numerical figures for Sikhs in the country. Estimates vary, the US Department of State estimates 20,000[3]. The largest Sikh population in Pakistan is found in Peshawar, in the Northwest Frontier Province.

Recently the Sikh community within Pakistan has been making every effort possible to progress in Pakistan. For example Harcharan Singh became the first Sikh to join the Pakistan army. For the first time in the 58 year history of Pakistan there has a Sikh been selected into Pakistan's army.

After the success of Harcharan Singh in Pakistan's army and Gulab Singh as a traffic inspector, now it's the turn of Kalyan Singh Kalyan who is the first Sikh Province Assembly Member in Pakistan and Kalyan is a member of the Pakistan Peoples Party(PPP)

The Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee is a Sikh religious organisation in Pakistan.

It is very sameful act by these shameless goons called taliban. They are power hungry and manipulate islam as a tool to gain power. Jazia may have been levied on minorties long time ago but it is no longer practiced anywhere in the islamic world. Taliban are barbaric goons and do not represent muslims at all.
