I guess it would make sense for them to be on both sides, since they can see different points of time at once, they might be able to see all possible outcomes from a single action.

The observers have always been on the other side too. You can see that in the episode called Peter, think that's season two episode 13, Gemini was in Walternate's lab and he discusses the fact that he changed the future with two other observers. One was called August. Anyhow his two observer friends had just watched 'Back to the Future' starring Eric Stoltz. In our world Eric started filming but producers thought he was too serious for the part and Michael J Fox took the role up as he had becam
