The Administrative Center of Novgorod Oblast.
Veliky Novgorod is an Ancient Capital and One of Russia's Oldest Cities. A Unesco World Heritage Site . It was A Great Republic at the time of Kievan Rus which was also the center of the Ruling Principalities.

A History that is Forever Written in the Chronicles of East Slavic History and It was also a trading post for the Varangians . Veliky Novgorod is a Different City and is much older than the Volga City of Nizhny Novgorod.

@srboslav92 original settlement of Novgorod was not Slavic - Novgorod originally did not belong to Russia since Russia did not even exist in medieval Rus - Novgorod made alliances with Lithuania in order to stay separate from Moscow - it took several battles and 30,000 dead Novgorodians before Moscow was able to annex Novgorod - so much for its original Russian status?????
