Mario del Monaco- Samson
Rise Stevens - Delilah.
Dir; Fausto Cleva.
Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and chorus. 1958
=======================================
French Text:
DALILA

Dalila! Dalila! Je t'aime!
====================================
English traduction:
DALILA
My heart opens to your voice as the flowers open
The kisses of the morning!
But, O my beloved, better dry my tears,
Your voice speak again!
Tell me that you come back Dalila forever!
Reiterate my affection
Oaths of old, these oaths that I loved!
Ah answer my tenderness!
Pour me, pour me a drink!

SAMSON
Dalila! Dalila! I love you!

DALILA
Thus we see the corn cobs waving
Under the light breeze
So my heart trembled, ready to console
In your voice dear to me!
The arrow is slower to bring the death,
Than is to steal your lover in your arms!
Ah answer my tenderness! etc.

SAMSON
By my kisses I want to dry your tears
And your heart away alarms.
Dalila! Dalila! I love you!

    delmonaco........

  • As good as this studio recording is, the broadcast performance (4/12/1958) is MUCH better. Stevens is in much richer voice for the matinee, del Monaco is outstanding as Samson, Martial Singher sang his final Met broadcast quite well as the High Priest of Dagon, and Norman Scott (Abimelech) and Giorgio Tozzi (An old Hebrew) contribute POSITIVELY, as does Cleva's conducting (Irving Kolodin be DAMNED!). This recording, by the way, was done for RCA at the tail end of the "Met Record Club" era.

  • Fantastic pair for this opera although MDM attacks that final Bb a bit under pitch as he often did :P

  • Ultimate Samson!!!
