"Roots Bloody Roots" is a song by Sepultura, the song is released as the first single from their sixth album Roots, released in 1996. The song is the band's best-known, and remains a concert staple to this day. A music video was filmed for the single which features the band performing in an underground cave as well as on the streets with a tribe of percussionists. This video can be found on the VHS We Are What We Are, which was later released on DVD as part of Chaos DVD. In addition to the song being Sepultura's most popular, it also one of the most widely recognized metal songs of the 90's.
The song also appears in live form on the band's live releases Under a Pale Grey Sky and Live in Sao Paulo. Another live version appears on the limited edition digipak version of the band's 2000 album Nation. Former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera has also played the song live numerous times with his other band Soulfly. Recordings of their version can be found on the limited edition versions of the albums Soulfly and Prophecy, as well as on the DVD The Song Remains Insane.
Song meaning
Like most Sepultura songs, the song is thought to be another protest song. The most common meaning that fans come up with is that everyone needs to preserve their own roots, and not modernize, forget or feel shame for them. This is shown in the lyrics We don't need to change, our ways to be saved. The music video shows Brazilians practicing Capoeira and native tribes playing the drums in their tribe uniforms.
Another theory is that Max is talking about his own country's roots. The video shows scenes of Catholic churches. It can also be about slavery in Brazil, and how blood was spilt so generations to come wouldn't be enslaved. This is shown in the lyrics And all I want to see, set us free.

The single was released on 2 CDs and 7" vinyl. The first CD was presented in a card foldout digipak case, while the second was in a standard slimline jewel case. Early copies of the digipak version were embossed with a stamp of the band's thorned 'S' logo. The vinyl was a strictly limited edition and was red in colour.

Cavalera Conspiracy is a heavy metal group formed by Brazilian brothers Max Cavalera (vocals, guitar) and Igor Cavalera (drums), along with American guitarist Marc Rizzo and French guitarist Joe Duplantier playing bass. The band originally formed in 2007 as Inflikted but changed its name for legal reasons. The group's creation marked the end of a 10-year feud between the Cavalera brothers, who founded Sepultura in the early 1980s. They remained together in that band until December 1996, when Igor, guitarist Andreas Kisser, and bassist Paulo Jr. suggested to Max that the band cancel its contract with his wife and manager Gloria, saying she paid more attention to him than the band. Disagreeing, Max decided to leave Sepultura.
Max then formed a new band, Soulfly, and his brother Igor recorded four studio albums with Sepultura before leaving the band in January 2006. In July 2006, Max received an unexpected call from his brother, and by the end of the conversation, Max had invited Igor to visit him in Phoenix, Arizona, to perform in a Soulfly show. Igor joined Soulfly in concert and performed two Sepultura songs. After the show, Max suggested they begin a new project, and Igor accepted. To complete the band, Max chose Soulfly guitarist Marc Rizzo and the Gojira frontman Joe Duplantier to play bass guitar. The group then recorded their debut album at Undercity Studios in Los Angeles with engineer and co-producer Logan Mader in July 2007. Named after the band's original moniker, Inflikted was released through Roadrunner Records on 25 March 2008.
On Inflikted, the group's musical style combines elements of Sepultura and the Cavaleras' hardcore punk roots, and the straightforward death metal fused with riffs and guitar solos of the thrash metal and groove metal that Sepultura created between Beneath the Remains (1989), Arise (1991) and Chaos A.D. (1993). According to Allmusic, the release of Inflikted "brings to fruition one of the most anticipated yet most improbable reunions in heavy metal history,"[1] while in the words of Joel McIver, "Those thousands praying for the Max-era Sepultura line-up to reform can get off their knees: the key reunion has happened."
