Meticulously restored from Sue 776, issued March 1963. This was his only hit record.
Today, he wouldn't have raised an eyebrow, but in 1963, an effeminate black man in spangles, makeup and eye shadow was quite the freak show in the eyes of the mainstream public. Nonetheless, Jackie Shane packed Toronto's Sapphire Club and worked across Canada and into the US. By the late '60s, he had disappeared from the music scene entirely. There are rumors of his murder in California, but no proof exists, and to this day, no one knows what happened to Jackie Shane.
Unless this record is reissued from the master tape someday, this might be the cleanest version you will ever hear.

When Jackie appeared on American Bandstand, he was dressed as a woman, and Dick Clark never new. do no tell him eh? A&B records on Young Street had 2 photos of Jackie on the wall behind the cash register.
I worked there a little before you... I was 16, so it would have been in 67. Great times... always a little buzzed. Sam, Sid, Sam's weird Jewish princess daughter, Eddie, Marvin...
I worked at Sam the Recordman on Young St. after dropping out in the 60's and met Jackie. This song was the Toronto soul classic of the 60's.., probably too cool for TO.

Excellent song.
A&A was a couple of doors north of Sam's—and it's 'Yonge' Street.
Thanks a lot.
