A handful of corporations "own" the genes responsible for breast cancer, cystic fibrosis and others RIGHT NOW by way of patents and intellectual property rights.
If corporations can claim life as their private property in this way, what is stopping a single corporation from owning the genes that make up the entire human race?

In my opinion, if they want full rights to the genes, they should pay everyone who has a certain gene both to use it and not share it with other companies. It would greatly reduce any possible monopolies on the human genome and make it economically illadvised to try to do so.

Hey, that "they didn't understand basic biology; it looked like a chemical to them" line is the main thing I remember from some doco I watched once.
