That's not a beret, that's a Phrygian cap. It's a French revolutionary symbol which represents the people's pursuit of liberty. It was common for the lower class (Les sans culottes) to wear as an expression of their love for la Patrie and everything it stood for.

Nikki Blonsky is pretty damn good in this role.....the rest of the cast needs some work honestly....she's the standout of this entire song....the chorus blows
