U.S. Rep Diana DeGette delivers an opening statement at the House Committee on Energy and Commerce's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hearing in response to the recent Salmonella outbreak in shell eggs. Rep. DeGette is an original co-sponsor of the Food Safety Enhancement Act of 2009, which passed the House of Representatives with broad, bipartisan support in July of 2009. Throughout her career in Congress Rep. DeGette has fought for updates to our food safety legislation in order to more adequately prevent and respond to outbreaks of foodborne illness. In particular she has championed provisions designed to increase traceability, and give the FDA mandatory recall authority.
