Please extrapolate that "the Pali Canon itself has ample evidence suggesting it isn't the words of Buddha." As a former Shin Buddhist sensei and priest who abandoned Pure Land for Theravada, I would love to read your answer.

@Aurelius27x: It really doesn't matter whether the words in the Canon are exactly as uttered by the Buddha or were paraphrased by someone else. As long as the words make sense, they are useful. Nirvana does not depend on being mathematically precise about the origin of the words; it depends on understanding and practising the concepts underlying the words. There is really nothing to be disheartened about, just because not everything in the Canon may be exactly as uttered by the Buddha.

Ironically, Theravada has its own contradiction of accepting the Canon as the Buddha's words in spite of facts suggesting otherwise. Potentially, all the 100s of millions of people practicing towards enlightenment on faulty teaching. That's disheartening.

The qualms of a puritan. But then again Buddhism is much more reason, and logic based than some religion of wishful thinking and silly ideals. It makes sense that one seeks out the purest form of the said teachings... even though the Pali Canon itself has ample evidence suggesting it isn't in the words of Buddha. There just doesnt seem to be a pure religion... all of it gets twisted and perverted to suit the needs/wants of other generations.

While I would agree that his words "disgusted", "wasted" were quite harsh, they come from a disappointment of finding problems and faults in a religion. I had similar experiences with Christianity, also feeling that I had wasted my time before I found my new religion, Buddhism. So maybe we should also have a bit compassion with such harshness, even more so than it was not directed to Master Hua but to the teachings which Ven Dhammavuddho found to be faulty.

Disgusted & wasted?

I would die to be the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua's disciple when he was still around. Just to be in his presence was a blessing. Yet he was the one who ordained you and you were under his care and watched by him, yet now you slander that very tradition and neglect a good and wise advisor? I did not have the conditions or good roots to see Ven.Master Hua, yet you had everything going, and you treat it like nothing. I'm so sorry to hear this from you. I'm so dissapointed.
