Expressive typography has been evolving since it began. It is a dynamic medium for artists to express their creativity and convey messages. Once the practice was limited to putting words on paper or film, but it now includes using an increasingly large body of fonts, colors, and lettering techniques (such as the swipe or fade used in power point presentations) or the addition of music to enhance the lettering of a film title. It is a puzzle with infinite pieces that could be assembled in any way an individual chooses. I was inspired by One Thousand and One Nights because it's more than a simple story. An influential piece of literature in the Middle East, its origins are in a mix of Persian, Arabic and Indian cultures. Imagery, love, paranoia, and fantasy are interwoven between intricate plots and complex personalities.
I adapted ancient Arabic calligraphy to design the characters and environment to reflect an image of One Thousand and One Nights. My final product is an animation of traditional calligraphy that morphs into storytelling through expressive typography.
