Millions of tons of bycatch, or "trash fish," (fish unintended to be caught or juveniles of the target species) are hauled in by fisheries every year. Oceans are in enough trouble as it is; we need to ensure solid fishing policy if we are to save the precious resources the ocean provides.

Bycatch: Fact, we are required to use gear which has a bycatch rate. Fact: Fisheries management could allow a 5% sellable bycatch rate which would help promote bycatch from being bycatch. Fisheries managment could dismiss laws requiring the fishermen here in N.C. USA from having to catch bycatch in order to save certain "valuable" species. Fact: The bycatch isn't bycatch at all, we just arent allowed to harvest the species which are proclaimed to be bycatch despite the population of that specie.
