This video demonstrates the excellent properties of cellulose insulation. A common myth that because cellulose is made out of paper it is a fire hazard is finally laid to rest. Here we see that because cellulose insulation contains borates and other fire retarders it is nearly impossible to burn under the heat of a propane torch. Unfortunately, that is not the case with the fiberglass insulation. The video shows that the facing on the fiberglass insulation burns readily once heat is applied.

  • The difference is that cellulose does a much better job of stopping air flow through the stud cavity than fiberglass does. If air can't get to the studs or drywall paper they won't burn.

  • Since drywall has paper on it, the paper on the insulation is a mute point. Until that is changed. Plus the studs catch on fire pretty well on their own. Both seem good to use.
