Rudra Veena is an ancient Hindu plucked musical instrument dating back to the age of Aryans. It is the purest amongst all the Veena family of musical instruments like the Sitar, Surbahar, Saraswati Veena, Godha, Kinnari and the Jantri Veenas. Beenkar Suvir plays Alaap, Jod, Jhala and two Gats , one in slow Chau Tal (12 Beats) and another in fast Sool Taal (10 Beats), in the Raga Malgunji. Suvir is a disciple of Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar and Nirmalya Dey. visit www.beenkar.com .

  • What was the date and location of this concert?

  • @4embrown - 6 Oct, 2006. PSK Auditorium, New Delhi.

  • nobody knows who the pakhawaj player is?

  • Pt Dalchand Sharma is on the Pakhawaj. Pandit Dalchand Sharma belongs to the Nathdwara Gharana. He learnt pakhawaj from Acharya Pandit Tottaram Sharma in the old Indian tradition of guru-shishya-parampara.

He is a Top Grade Artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan and has performed extensively both on the radio and television, as a soloist and as an accompanist. He has participated in many prestigious music festivals in India.

  • Evidences in the form of ancient pictures, sculptures and paintings clearly indicate that Rudra Veena or Been was played in various positions such as :

    1. Standing

    2. Vajrasana

    3. Virasana

    4. Sukhasana

and various other postures which are "sthira" as well as "sukham". Yoga Sutra defines 'Asana' as "Sthira-Sukham-asanam" and all such posturs are "natural".

  • May be my western thoughts lack the in depth

understnding of the ways of India however who

cares how he sits if the music sounds great in that it does he can stand on his head

and gargle peanut butter while playing marbles. Who cares as long as the music

    stirs your emotion.

  • He is sitting in the Dagarvani style , seeing as he is playing a Dagarvani veena. It is too big to be played over the shoulder. This style was created by none other than the famous been player Z. M. Dagar. Look it up if you think it is wrong. He changed the way the veena was played.

  • The history is written on the Veena, this is beyond to capacity of the spirit, and no words can adequately cover this music. From Palestine with all the appreciation to the Indian culture.
