Most any audio interface has a few microphone preamps loaded in, but they're a pretty spartan affair, not doing much more than boosting signals to forgivable levels for passage to the interface's converters. But a preamplifier can be so much more. Take, for instance, the Studio Projects VTB1. With so much beyond mere signal boosting, the VTB1 does what a microphone preamplifier is supposed to and provides the first level of sound-sculpting in your recording chain.

Owen takes you through the multifarious functionality of the Studio Projects VTB1 — which includes a helpful insert jack and microphone input impedance switching — and then serves up a few sound sample of the VTB1 in action.

  • I already have a pod live x3, which is perfect for recording guitars and bass for me, but I'm really not satisfied with the preamps for vocal. The gain is... Meh, and compression.. Meh. Honestly, my iPhone4 does a better job with it's condenser mic and cheap compressor. So now I wanna go for a condenser mic and good preamps for vocal, with phantom power and good compression. I'm considering the VTB1, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, the ART Tube PAC and the ART Tube MP Project Series. Any sugestion?

  • @JBr33zyMusic It depends on what you are recording. If you are doing vocals you will just need a XLR microphone cable. If you are doing a DI (direct instrument) then you will need a instrument (guitar) cable. It also depends on what interface you have. Most of them will have an XLR or/and Instrument input although some interfaces are output only (such as the Native Instruments Audio 2 DJ).

  • Hey, what would I need to connect this to my usb interface?

  • Can I use 2 mics on this preamp?

  • @lyricmusicbg you must have audio interface to plug it unbalanced/balanced..

  • can i connect the VTB1 directly to my Windows PC and how???

  • the bass sounded really good on there. flats?
