I happened to have Tone "Trek poles. Liked them so much, I showed them to my sister and now she has some. They are sure easy to use. I'm 81 years old.
Being a Brit, and living in a country where we have freedom of access to countryside, I never get that you guys "street walk" (!) Last time I was in Florida I brought my poles and found hundreds of miles of amazing forest trails to walk. Give up the side walks, guys! (And look up your local chapter of IVV, and go and convert them to NW!) James Hardiman, The Happy Walker
I bought poles. I bought an instruction book, that I read several times, to know the description of the nordic walking technique by heart. And together with a good Youtube video like this one, I must say I got the right step, the right grip, and it gives a great feeling being outdoors with my poles! I can recommend this to anyone. :)
What is good about this video that it shows the proper release of the hand as the hand and pole go behind you. The proper placement of the strap around the wrist then allows the pole to be grabbed lightly by the hand as it comes forward again. Many "experts" and instructors on YouTube grip the poles tightly. The effect of relaxing the hand, letting go of the grip, and spreading your fingers as it goes backwards is that this pumps the blood back to the heart. This was the way I was taught.
"Use hiking poles to walk around your suburb! It's technical, so it makes you fit!"
