We also, too, have to remember...this is early twenty-something Ed Bauer. He was cocky and filled with a zest to succeed...and to show how better he was compared to his father but the irony was he became an alcoholic, too, and his brother Mike picked up Bill's weakness for women.
The more mature Ed was never written so self-absorbed, although he could become preachy at times when it came to his friends and family. Young Ed was always being taught some sort of life lesson in the end.

He was ashamed of his background and his father's drinking. Remember AA, Al-Anon and even Ala-Teen didn't really exist on those days. Also Bill Bauer was always at "odds" with his sons.

Ed is and was a pompous ass at times! He is so stand-offish with Leslie. I am really loving Leslie in this series of clips! She is honest and fresh!
