Analysis: Somalia Piracy Began in Response to Illegal Fishing and Toxic Dumping by Western Ships off Somali Coast

President Obama vowed an international crackdown to halt piracy off the coast of Somalia Monday soon after the freeing of US cargo ship captain Richard Phillips, who had been held hostage by Somali pirates since last Wednesday. While the pirates story has dominated the corporate media, there has been little to no discussion of the root causes driving piracy. We speak with consultant and analyst Mohamed Abshir Waldo. In January, he wrote a paper titled The Two Piracies in Somalia: Why the World Ignores the Other? [includes rush transcript]

  • Mr. Walso makes serious allegations.

The allegations, if true, are unfortunately not new. It is an example of the ongoing exploitation of poor nations; poor media coverage of ongoing problems; and the inability of the poor nation to effectively engage nations taking advantage of its situation.

We have to insist that it is the best interest of all nations to address poverty, exploitation, and their impacts.

  • Dumping toxic waste, fisheries, now, where does this fish go?

  • I agree with cityofdestiny, however, how do you account for the pirates hijacking humanitarian supply ships?

  • European companies are paying Italian and Swiss companies to dump NUCLEAR, CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL waste off the coast of Somalia! They have been doing this since before the civil war in Somalia and there is next to no media coverage....It might interest you to know that they are also fishing up to $300,000,000 worth of fish per year and YOUR EATING THE STUFF(so if you do nothing about this you will die of some terrible cancer)!!!

  • @batse1

    Totaly agree my brethren

  • so whats the problem with being muslim ?:o

  • legitimacy to piracy no, everybody understands that! These fleets are breaking international law. You have european companies sailing under belize, honduras, so they can avoid EU-regulation. Japanese, saudi, yemeni and koreans fleets are using the chaos in Somalia to their advantage. The only side we have to take is that of the truth. We Africans don't want to take hostages. Those who do are criminals! But we can not sit idle while we are being robbed either.
