Be sure to watch in HD! I hope you enjoy this look at The Backloggery's FFXI presence, and the world of Vana'diel itself.

In a last-ditch effort to make a notable accomplishment in FFXI before FFXIV's release, Try4ce started fresh in the game and organized a linkshell for Backloggery members on Sylph, his original server where he played as Kobalt before quitting 5 years ago. Since Shadow Lord is the final boss of the original main game storyline, we considered this the point at which FFXI could be considered "beaten," for Backloggery purposes.

Having begun in early April 2010, over 25 people joined in The Backloggery's cause, a mix of new players, lapsed players, and established players transferred over from other servers.

Six of us were finally ready to take on the Shadow Lord in early August, and we defeated him on August 6. We died four times before the attempt that's highlighted here, in which some of our 2-hour abilities had finally come back (a special job-specific ability that can be used only once every 2 hours). The really tricky thing for us was his resistance to physical attacks, which begins at half HP on the first form. To break this cycle, he needs to sustain magic damage, but our summoning and puppet magic was the only way out of it. The battle is cut a bit, but the actual battle took around 14 minutes. There was a constant problem of ability and MP management, making it tremendously difficult to keep everyone going as the battle wore on. Needless to say, with our levels, we felt we had a truly satisfying final battle.

A huge thanks to everyone who has joined The Backloggery linkshell... I honestly thought I would probably get no more than a handful of people to join me. I even considered not saying anything, because I figured no one would come. I am still stunned that so many people jumped at the opportunity to try a game that, frankly, most people write off simply because it's not single-player, or it's not WoW. Vana'diel may very well be my favorite video game world, more than worthy of the name "Final Fantasy." And, for a numbered Final Fantasy, I just couldn't bear any longer to leave it where I left it years ago.

I can't say enough for how thankful I am for everyone who came to Sylph. I met a lot of friends that I hadn't met through The Backloggery alone. I'll be around in Vana'diel until September 21. After that... let's meet up in Eorzea!

  • You guys are winner.

  • Great job everyone! Time to beat the rest of it!?

  • Nice usage of FFVIII music :). So epic.

  • beautiful...just beautiful.

  • Ahh my friend Kobalt and I played together on Sylph. Darn shame I did not revive my Elvaan in time so I can aid you in the battles, or bring my characters that were once on sylph with Kobalt, back to Sylph from Bismarck. I had a few level 80s I could of thrown in there like DNC, PUP and DRG. Shadowlord trances for 5 minutes and its like hit it with magic! Also the Kobalt shot in the Hall of Gods where he left was awesome. Great video! Wish I could of been there to help.

  • Good job guys! Truly an epic victory!

  • This is how :U:s become :B:s.
