Guro John Spezzano is an instructor at the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts, with instructor-level rankings in Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do, Filipino Kali, Indonesian Pencak Silat, Muay Thai, and Wing Chun. He also regularly practices Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Rey Diogo.
Here, he is shown demonstrating Dr. Mark Cheng's Tactical Turkish Get-Up progression for combat martial artists & tactical operators with a 70 lb kettlebell. Please note the slow, deliberate control with which Spezzano is moving, as well as the properly aligned shoulder, elbow, and wrist position. Grapplers, tactical operators, and people who rely on "agile strength" should be able to readily appreciate the usefulness of this particular TTGU progression. Dr. Cheng currently teaches at the Inosanto Academy's kettlebell program and monthly workshops.

@rowingdad Agreed, I have those lifts in my arsenal as well. But when it comes to gear and training space requirements, the KB is hard to beat! Please follow me on Twitter "jvs_hardstyle" and check out my blog hollywoodkettlebells

@jvs9932 I'm a kettlebell fan too, but I think full body movements like deadlift, squat (front and back), and standing press along with the Olympic lifts are very functional as well. Agree though that KB's are great.

absolutely...the difference won't be noticed as much in the turkish getup but swings, snatches, clean and press, front squats, bottoms up presses etc. are all show the kettlebells superiority.
some kettlebell exercises can only be performed with kettlebells as well

Because the handle of a KB is offset, you cannot grab the center of gravity of the weight, unlike a dumbbell. This changes EVERYTHING, and makes lighter weights more challenging to move.
Also, the KB approach is completely different from traditional weight training. With KBs you utilize your whole body for the movement to generate full body strength and stability, whereas the isolation training of traditional weight lifting is more of a bodybuilding approach.

I have to ask, is kettlebell training any more efficient than doing the same lift with a dumbell? Kettlebells seem to be the uber craze right now, and I just remain unconvinced. How do you think kettlebells are more effective?
