Armenian National Assembly Announced Amnesty

National Assembly discussed RA president Serzh Sargsyans suggestion and adopted a decision on announcing amnesty. Formerly, there had been 6 cases of amnesty in Armenia in 1992, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2006.

The draft on amnesty was presented by Gevorg Danielyan, the justice minister. He mentioned that the amnesty could affect about two thousand people, about 500 people would be released from prisons.

Davit Harutyunyan, the chairman of the NA state and legal issues commission mentioned in the beginning of his speech that the amnesty could tone down the tension among the public.

It is mentioned in the 2nd point of the amnesty text that amnesty shall affect persons sentenced to maximum five years of imprisonment in relation to the events that happened in Yerevan on March 1-2, 2008.
