She's beyond fantastic. I love her. Her scatting is incredible. I love this song, too, and I'm probably going to record it one of these days for my second video because I play sax and this tune lends itself to a really soulful sound.

@MrStyle23 Thats like comparing apples and oranges. Ella was an elder when she did this song and still sounded good but in her younger days she was nothing to play with. lol
-
@BluesRob Valid point. She was name dropping something that celebrities do more now then ever.
-
Maybe she was just promoting a good black film. You know at that time there weren't to many. The 70's were the era of the Blaxploitation movies, cheap and tacky,
Lady Sings the Blues was a very good movie

This is a Billy Holiday song hence the Lady Sing the Blues reference. But I LOVE Ella and also Billy! Ella's voice give me the chills!

I love this! Especially the arrangement. She's not near as deep as Billie but Ella like always brings something different to the song.

Perhaps it was the most "relevant" and timely association at the moment. The consensus seems to be that Ella was trying to stay hip and "with it" during these years. The arrangement suggests as much, as well as other live gigs she did around this time. That Beatles like album she did shows this too.
I revere Ella but why the heck would she introduce "Good Morning Heartache" as "from the picture 'Lady Sings the Blues'" instead of as a Billie Holiday song? Was it because Diana Ross was appearing? Did the promoters tell her to say that? Pressure from Berry Gordy? Ella knew Billie, they were peers, she should not have been asked to promote the film onstage (Diana gave an excellent performance, that's not the point).

She used the reference to Lady Sings the Blue because this is a Billie Holiday song. Billie actually came before her and in my opinion paved the way for her but I love Ella and actually prefer her. She was just giving credit where credit is due. Love much to Ella and Billie!!!!
