What I do is that I just use lots of layers, and make one change in each layer.

Great tutorial! I've been looking for the functionality of that clip...I've been making them into smart objects containing the associated adjustment layers...yeah... Not sure if it's possible, but is there a way to make separate smart filter masks on a smart object without duplicating the layer? Thanks!

Wow. Wish I knew this for some of my class projects. It would have saved a lot of space since I dupe a lot of layers for every effect I do to save the previous.
