@fmg50 Specifically, it was Algeria in 1961 and 1962. Units of the Legion, particularly the 1st Parachute Regiment, mutinied and planned a drop on Paris to seize the government. The plans were foiled, the 1st REP disbanded, and many of the Legion officers became members of the Secret Army Organization (OAS), a terrorist group.

This story was fictional bu Abd el Krim was a Berber guerrilla leader that actually defeated Spanish colonial troops in several battles in the 1920s. But then a combined French & Spanish army of 250,000 invaded his "Rif Republic" & defeated el Krim in 10 mos. of fighting & using Mustard gas against the Berbers.
