An AU take on Kate's past

Kate and her mother are being abused by Kate's step-father and despite her pleas for her mother to leave Wayne, Diane is determined to stay with him because she believes that her husband loves her deep down.

Kate goes to a bar to drown her sorrows when she meets a man named Sawyer. When the two go back to his place, Kate breaks down. She feels totally alone in the world and feels like she's going crazy. Sawyer can relate to how she's feeling and promises to look after her and keep her safe.

Kate leaves the following morning before Sawyer wakes up so that she can say goodbye to her mother once and for all.

Sawyer, assuming that she had done a runner, is surprised when Kate comes back to him. Upon questioning, Kate admits that she came back because she wanted his help and that Diane had made her choice; Wayne. Sawyer tells her that they're still going to leave together.

The next morning, Kate tells Sawyer that she'll meet him at the airport; she needs to pick up some things first. Once in the car, she gets a phone call from a doctor named Jack. He explains that her mother has been badly beaten up; so bad in fact that she's had her back broken.

Kate rushes to the hospital where her mother asks for her help. Sawyer finds Kate in the waiting room sobbing where he realises that he truely cares for her.

Kate knows what she must do to help her mother: "I have to do this" "Do what?" "Kill my Step-father". Sawyer tries to talk some sence into her, saying that no good will come of it. Kate says nothing and leaves.

She then waits for Wayne to return from another drunken night out and puts him to bed. She then goes and grabs a gun from the back of the cupboard, knowing what she must now do. Only to find Sawyer waiting for her in Wayne's room. He doesn't want to Kate to become a murderer and risk going to jail so instead he volunteers to kill her step-father. She thanks him but when she closes the door behind her, the noise wakes up Wayne who asks what is going on. Sawyer tells him that he's doing this for her.

With Wayne dead, the two go on the run; Sawyer is not himself after becoming a murderer. They're then tracked down by a marshall. Kate takes control of the wheel in the hope of spinning the car around but both her and Sawyer lose control of the car, flipping it over and over until there's no chance that anyone could have survived.
