@dratsab - I know this is a 6 month old post, but to do this I went into one of the old control sets and exported the product key to my desktop, opened it with notepad, changed the control set number to the one matching the most recent one that was created, double clicked it, checked to see if it changed it (it did), then restarted, clicking f8 as before, and chose last good configuration. All is back to normal now.

but it is strange that there are actually two versions on your Windows XP Home PC,
it can also reverse from professional to home edition?

@kragle2008 Well, you see. I actually bought my copy of xp and vista and windows 7, so all my computers are legal, also with my student discount I get Microsoft office for about $40, now granted I haven't bought a new copy of office in 5 years, I still have office 2007, which was made in 2006.

@kragle2008 Russia called, they want you back.
How can this be UNdone? Can I just delete the Controlset003 folder? Iv left it too long and cant restore back to the original registery...
I was trying to get remote desktop, but it doesnt allow updates when this is done...

@dratsab1980 just do a System Restore, or if you backed up your registry, double click the back-up file and restart your computer.
