Kaha jata hay kay Lata apni Sultanat mein kisi aur female singer ki hukmrani bardasht nahi karti thein.. Isi waja say bahut si female singers ko jaisay hi Indian Movies mein pasand kiya jata Lata unko apnay liay khatra samajhtay huay unka career khatam karnay mein numayan kirdar ada kartien... like Suman Kalyanpur, Sudha Malhotra, Vani Jayram, Anuradha, Runa Laila (who want there and sang Do Dewanay Shehr mein for Gulzar's Gharonda). She din spare seniors like Shamshad Begum, Geeta Dutt and even her own sister Asha Bhosle (who complained in a Tv interview that Lata never helped her in singing or in career or in any way. Its also claimed that the increasing popularity of Madam Noor Jehan especially after Noor Jehan and Rafi Duet (Yahan Badla Wafa ka Bewafai ke siwa kya hay) for Feroz Nizami's Jugnu forced Lata to indirectly pressurise Noor Jehan n Shaukat Rizvi to leave India. (True or False but it proved to be a Blessing in Disguise for Pak Films)
Suman Kalyanpur survived for a bit longer cuz she sang for c-class movies majorly and thus wasnt a big threat to Lata. Yet she has some glorious songs to her credit.
Heres a list of Suman's 12 Best Duets with Rafi Sahab :-)

1. Ajahun aaye Baalma, a classic from Saanjh Aur Savera, a Shankar-Jaikishan composition.
2. Aaj Kal Ter Mere, a lilting melody from the same composers.
3. Dil-e-Betaab ko seene se Lagaana hoga, a melliflous composition from the rich repertoire of Naushaad Saab
4. Chand takta hai Idhar, from Doojh ka chand by Roshan Saab.
5. Itna hai tumse pyaar mujhe, a romantic song from Suraj-another S-J contribution.
6. Baad Muddat se yeh ghadi aayee, a song based on Chaaya nut raga from the ghazal maestro Madan Mohan from Jahan Ara.
7. Ke jaan chali jaaye, from the film Anjaana, a Laxmi-Pyare composition.
8. Maine ae Jaane Wafaa Tumse Mohabbat ki hai from Bedaag-Roshan Saab.
9. Tumse O Haseena Kabhi Mohabbat, from the film Farz, another Laxmi-Pyare contribution.
10. Na Na Karte pyaar tumhin Se kar Baithe, from Jab Jab Pjool Khile,a Kalyanji-Anandji composition.
11. Thehriye Hosh Mein Aaloon , a beautifully romantic contribution Of Khayyam Saab from Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain.
12. Mujhe yeh phool na de tere dilbharon ki kasam from Gazal-a Madan Mohan product.

Enjoy a Duet .. Much More to Come Laterz if I get Feedback :-)

  • Dear Dr Bukhari, you are perfectly right in all that you have written, but one point is extremely doubtful: till 1949, Lata was still not a force to reckon with, and it is extremely unlikely that she could have been in the slightest way responsible for Noorjahan's decision to opt for Pakistan. I am sure even Noorjahan herself can not have made such a claim.

  • thanx for being here..yes u may be right but then thats why i've opened this discussion for logical debate here and anyone can give opinion in decent words..also i believe that there can never be any comparisons as everybody is unique in one way or another.

  • The fact is that Lata and Rafi stopped singing with each other from 1963 to 1967. They had a clash regarding the copyright of the songs. So the music directors had to use either Suman/ Asha/ Sharda for female voice or Kishore/ Talat/ Manna Dey/ Mahendra Kapoor for male voice. Otherwise there was no chance of Sardar Malik using Suman in his song.

  • Playback singing is not merely a question of voice but also of suitable expression concerning situation AND role - in which Lata is only equalled, if not surpassed by, Mohd Rafi..

Concerning Lata's behaviour,NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE! (no such complaints about Rafi, Saigal, Kishore who enjoyed similar status as Lata)

Lata was neither producer/music director/financier - so why couldn't the film industry have followed OP Nayyar's lead? WHY DID THEY HAVE TO LICK HER BOOTS??

  • I meant that " one should NOT be biased in favor of Lata".

  • Suman has sung a great song with Rafi. She is every bit as good as Lata and has a higher range. One should be biased in favor of Lata. Make them both sing the same song and then you can judge better. Her voice is very similar to Lata, so one cannot say that Lata had a unique voice. I don't believe that Lata was unfair to any body. It is the fault of the incompetent and tone deaf music composers who could not judge Suman independently and had to follow the crowd, which is hardly ever a proper ju

  • thanks for the moldiest songs , this was first time I heard this song .

  • Long live Shankar Jaikishan for composing this beauty ... hidden gem .

    Thanks for posting this.

  • I don't have the facts about Lataji ruining other playback singer's careers, but, please do not compare Lataji to anyone.

Her superiority can never be matched. I mean its one thing fan commenting based on preferences and another by esteemed knowledgeable musicians.

  • Did it ever occured to you guys that others could not compete with Lataji? She is far superior than others, so don't blame her for being selfish.

  • Lata and her sisters also destroyed the career of Mubharak Begum.

  • I think Rafi and Suman Kalyanpur sang the songs in Sanjh aur Savera beautifully. Can someone upload the wonderful song Ajahun na aaye balama from this movie. Thanks.
