This Drawing was filmed in real time and shows the approach of Andrew Loomis of how to draw a head. (The principle of the cross) It is drawn entirely with 2b pencil on Bainbridge coquille No.2 paper.
For more information according on this system, i suggest reading "Drawing the Head and Hands" by Andrew Loomis, printed by The Viking Press.

In this final part of the demo, we finish with the hair and final detail.
Alas, The completed drawing.

Enjoy and Thanks For Watching!

  • I have two of his books, this is like watching the master himself and in real time, thank you, its brilliant!

  • I also work on andrew loomis figures, but not perfected as he did =)

  • It would be great if you can take someones face reference, for example, an actor, and draw his face using the Loomis method.

Anyway, all of your videos are very helpful. Thanks.

  • @JosuePlayboy I need photoshop.. please

  • @blackNgreyArt You can actually seem him looking to his left several times throughout the videos. So yes, he probably had reference. And yes, this technique works for any head you might want to draw. Just keep in mind that its a guide. You can change things around as needed (i.e. different head shape, bigger/smaller nose, etc.).

  • @blackNgreyArt yes..that is what interest me too...

  • who needs Photoshop ? :)

  • @blackNgreyArt The technique GENERALLY works in reference to anyone, but it's very unlikely for someone to have exact proportions. It's mainly for reference in shading and perception, and still quite useful. My guess is he did this from his mind.

  • great series

  • Awsome ! Question; are you looking at a reference picture or do you draw from your mind? Does this technique work when you shall draw a portrait from a photograph?

    :)
