"The Mystical World of George MacDonald"

This film is now available on DVD for free to my YouTube subscribers. I may sell it eventually, but I want my supporters here to have it first and at no cost. All you have to do is send me a message here or through the email at my website and ask for it. Feel free to show it at your church, school, or other special events.

Part 3 - "Phantastes"

This is the 3rd part from a 51-minute documentary on the life and fantasy works of 19th century Scottish author--George MacDonald. I had abandoned the project in 2007 but eventually went back and finished it. It takes a long time to do everything by myself: writing the script, programming all the lettering effects and other special effects, hunting down photos, and especially composing and recording background music along with the narration.

The entire script is culled from my book: "C.S. Lewis Called Him Master (Exploring the Life & Adult Fantasy Works of George MacDonald)". MacDonald was a very big influence on later writers such as C.S Lewis and G.K. Chesterton. MacDonald is often spoken of as having had a mystical imagination. He excelled in fantasy literature of a spiritual nature, the best of which would probably be "Lilith", "Phantastes", "The Portent", and a children's book called "At the Back of the North Wind".

  • I checked Anodos on wiki and it gives it as meaning to ascend upwards on a path.

  • @jpo1410 I said in the movie that the word has several meanings.

  • whats the background music........ fantatsic

  • @kalex1427 Thank you kindly. Tis I and my trusty Taylor 314 CE guitar.

  • I think GMD had an instinctive understanding of multiple dimensions, or the possibility of it (Cosmo and the mirror). I felt that Phantastes was more "pagan" themed than christian, however. But I suppose it's all filtered through the reader's perspective. I especially enjoyed the ending.

  • @lyleth1 I don't know that I'd call it Pagan themed, but I know where you're coming from with the comment. I would put it in the same class as Lewis' novels which often took Pagan characters and stories and evolved them into a Christian message.

  • love the guitar work in this section.

  • @lyleth1 Well that's a good one to start with. It's almost like having several short stories within it. I loved the part about Cosmo and the girl in the mirror. Very cool.

  • Thank you for making these. I am new to GMD. And I have been blown away by Phantastes.

  • @Youlube32 It's possible. Pride is certainly an issue in the story, maybe the biggest issue. I never connected it with the man's age before, but I guess that could be.

There used to be a lot of legends having to do with Satan and pride that involved him being jealous of other angels that were younger than him too.
