First part of a multipart series about the digital coloring of faces and skin tones. Feel free to leave suggestions for the next parts and whatnot.

The lineart is available on deviantart! You can download it and paint along if you are so inclined!

This one isn't a great example of quality by any stretch, but sadly that is one of the side effects of multitasking with talking/recording.

  • you know, i really learned a little bit today about skin tones and high lighting. My skin tones have been flat and one dimensional. this can really help me get it to pop.

  • @MissJeriB Glad to hear traditional artists are enjoying these. Thanks.

  • After watching part of a deviant art critique you did I got the strangest thought; perhaps these tutorials aren't magnanimous gestures of good will geared toward aspiring digital artists but rather the vitriol soaked lambastings of an irked misanthropic satirist disguised as a well meaning philanthropist. Anyhoooo...I enjoy your videos and would love to see a real-time speed painting with narration emphasizing Painter presets, brush types and texture techniques. Something like "_06" or "_24"

  • @hilltophorror The DeviantART videos certainly seem to inspire a perception of snarkiness, but I really do enjoy looking at the art and learning to understand what goes into my own opinions. The motivational for the tutorials started as an exercise for my own coagulation of knowledge on a subject, but I am actually trying to just help people with what I can these days. I'm always happy when people get anything positive out of them. Thanks for the feedback.

  • About time you got back to actually doing art tutorials.... instead of that, the fuck was that man? DA critique??

  • @bengoshia Hah. It's fun to critique art though. Figuring out why things look bad is just as important as understanding why things look good.

  • I am really thankful for sharing your knowledge with us! :)

  • my favorite part was around 16:33 when you added that variety of colors. Most non artistic people would think that would be crazy but it looks awesome.

  • man, you are such a nice guy to share your genious skills:) makes me really think to dig out my old and forgotten drawing skills again:) thx

  • Which program do you use? I did this is in Photoshop CS 5.5 but I didn't get the right pencils that you used there. I really want them 'cause the way you paint looks neat instead with the pencils I used :c.
