About 3000 people have fled Wulu in Lakes State in South Sudan and settled in Malou, a tiny village next to a military training centre as a result of escalating tribal fighting. In Malou, Anyan Riak and the other so-called internally displaced people or IDPs, received some food, household items and roofing materials provided by international relief agencies. But what is perhaps changed her life more than anything is access to fresh water from a borehole. Marilena Chatziantoniou, is a South Sudan-based expert for the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department, which has a 38-million euro programme in South Sudan which funded the borehole in Malou. She says the situation is made worse by the availability of small arms.
