Performed by Judy Garland in A Star Is Born, 1954. This is a High Quality, Close Up.
Considered to be one of the greatest musical sequences ever created. Many genius talents contributed to this masterpiece.
Born In A Trunk was written by Leonard Gershe & Rogers Edens.
A note from Leonard Gershe, courtesy of The Judy Garland Database http://www.jgdb.com/star.htm says: I would appreciate your straightening out a misapprehension about "Born In A Trunk." I wrote the lyric, but the music was composed by Roger Edens, who could not be credited at the time because he was under exclusive contract to MGM. If you read the credit on the screen, it reads: "Born In A Trunk" by Leonard Gershe. That was as ambiguous as we could get. It does not say I wrote the music. I feel enough time has gone by for the truth to be known and for Roger Edens to be given his credit....when asked if Judy had anything to do with creation of the "Born in a Trunk" sequence:
"No, Judy had nothing to do with the writing of the song. I had had the first stanza of the lyric (with a totally different tune, in a faster tempo) going through my head for some time. Sid Luft called Roger when they realized they needed a musical number in the film to show exactly what made Vicki Lester a star. Roger came to me and asked me if I had any ideas. I sang him my 'Born In A Trunk.' He liked it. He wrote a new tune and I completed the lyric. I wrote the narration for the body of the number that follows the first chorus and Roger picked the standards ('You Took Advantage Of Me,' 'Black Bottom,' etc.) I asked that we include 'Melancholy Baby' because it was the punchline of a joke that Judy loved at the time and I knew Judy would love it."
Thank you, thank you very much I can't express it any other way
For with this awful trembling in my heart I just can't find another thing to say
I'm happy that you liked the show, I'm grateful you liked me
And I'm sure to you the tribute seemed quite right.
But if you knew of all the years of hopes & dreams & tears
You'd know it didn't happen overnight Huh, overnight!
I was born in a trunk in the Princess Theatre in Pocatella, Idaho
It was during the matinee on Friday & they used a makeup towel for my didee
When I first saw the light it was pink and amber
Coming from the footlights on the stage
When my dad carried me out there to say hello
They told me that I stopped the show.
So I grew up in a crazy world of dressing rooms & hotel rooms
And waiting rooms & rooms behind-the-scenes.
And I can't forget the endless rows
Of sleepless nights and eatless nights
And nights without a nickel in my jeans.
But it's all in the game & the way you play it
And you've got to play the game you know.
When you're born in a trunk at the Princess Theatre in Pocatello, Idaho.
At first I just stood and watched from the wings
That's all my mom and dad would allow.
But as I got older, I got a little bolder
And snuck out for their second bow.
They kept me in the act because they needed me to milk applause
Until one night, they did a crazy thing they left me out there all alone
Mama said 'you're on your own!'
And Papa shouted 'this is it kid, sing!'
I'll Get By
Written by Turk & Ahlert
I'll get by as long as I have you
Though there be rain and darkness too
I'll not complain, I'll see it through.
I learned very quickly the tricks of the trade
I practiced after everyone was gone
And with the tricks, I learned traditions
And the hardest one of all, is no matter what
The show must go on!
As time went by, I looked for jobs & was kicked from pillar to post
I haunted all the agents offices & I almost ended up a ghost!
You Took Advantage Of Me
Written by Rodgers & Hart
I'm a sentimental sap, that's all
What's the use of trying not to fall
I have no will, you made your kill
'Cause you took advantage of me
I'm just like an apple on the bough
And you're gonna shake me down somehow
So what's the use, you've cooked my goose
'Cause you took advantage of me
I'm so hot and bothered that I don't know
My elbow from my ear
I suffer something awful each time you go
And much worse when you're near
Here am I with all my bridges burned
Just a babe in arms, where you're concerned
So lock the doors, call me yours
'Cause you took advantage of me

Her voice is just vibrating with raw emotion and experience. A very honest performance that is so much like what she really experienced in her own life. Her voice is so powerful and she really lives up to her Power-Lungs description that they gave her as a child.
