@johnny102marvin they need to use power from the grid to start up and shut down, after that they should be able to power its self, so a nuclear reactor needs an outside input

I'm not sure.. but the Chernobyl accident was caused from a test that was trying to see if they could achieve that.

Does a nuclear power plant need outside electricity from the electrical grid to operate safely? Or, is some of the electricity generated by the nuclear power plant rerouted back into the system to run the computers, valves, switches, pumps, and other machines that make the nuclear power plant work?
In other words, can a nuclear power plant operate independently of the electrical grid without back up diesel powered generators, or back up batteries??

@heartlessvietboy no the water that cools the reactor is self contained and is only used to cool the reactor and heat the other water into steam

I dont know how a nuclear power station works. Does water even come in contact with anything of a Nuclear essence?
