wait.. um why am i watching this?

I have heard this called "backpuffing" we had this problem with our resolute, it was due to the stove pipe cap, it was all caked up with soot, once we cleaned that the stove worked great! no more back puffing!
-
The smoke is occurring due to ignition of hot gases which build up in the stove. It is not simply leaking smoke. Causes: not enough air intake and/or not enough draw in flue and/or wood is too dry (yes, too dry......not enough moisture content)
-
When starting your fire use a lot of paper and open all air intake on your stove, you need to heat your chimney to get a good draft, cold air in chimney is pushing down, a hot fire will push it up, creating a draft.

for you smoke problem on start up there is a new product called the DRAW COLLAR...just for applications like your...... ruth140@yahoo.com email me i can help you with that, it will solve your problem

Your stove is back puffing. You need to open the air control to allow the stove to run a little hotter or close the control and let the stove cool a bit. The wood is hot giving off gas that builds up until "poof" it puffs into the room.

how would you know if Englander is the best? Did you try all of them, or is it best because that's what you bought?
-
you do not have enough draft/exhaust. pressure is building up, firebox "burps" pushing enough smoke out flue and stove, sucks in some air (causing flames/burn), then repeats. Do you have a metal flue all the way up that chimney? If not, that is likely the problem.
can you burn coal in that wood stove

@firewoodguy2009 - I don't think so. I certainly wouldn't try it.

Same stove, same issue. I've found it to be common among VC Defiant owners. clean the catalytic element and always burn hotter than 500 while cat is engaged. I burn around 600-700ish, which keeps the glass cleaner anyways. Great stove... the Englander is so ugly.. why do so few companies make nice looking stoves??!!!! I love VC's designs.

I had a chimney service on it a few weeks ago and they did wonders. They cleaned out the catalytic converter but also discovered the mesh on the chimney cap had a lot of creosote build up. It's running like a champ now.

Did you ever get this issue resolved? I am thinking about installing the same model stove.

I did. It was simply air starved and I needed to open the air vents more. There may be more to it, but that works for now. I'm probably going to clean the catalytic converter as a previous person suggested. I also have a problem getting it to start without smoking up the house. The horizontal chimney run exacerbates that problem. My simple fix for that is to put a fan in the window blowing in, pressurize the room before starting the fire to get it to draw.
