A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada explains the history of Vedic culture, and the societal characteristics of the Aryans, prior to and during the progression of the Dark Age:

"Kali Yuga means the dark age, or the sinful age, or the age for argument, unnecessary talks and fights."

He goes into the current nature of modern human society:

"So, at the present moment, practically there is no Brahman, no Kshatriya, no Vaishya, only Sudras - fourth-class men.. You cannot expect any happiness guided by the fourth-class man."

He thus explains that it is only logical that especially in the midst of the strife and suffering in Kali Yuga the Aryans (those endowed with Ārya; nobility) rightfully rule and forge a great example to the world:

"This is essential that the human society must be divided into four divisions. The Brahman class means the first-class, ideal man. So that by seeing their character, their behavior, others will try to follow.
'Yad Yad acarati sresthas'" ("Whatever action a great man performs..." [from Bhagavad Gita 3.21: "Whatever action a great man performs, common men follow. And whatever standards he sets by exemplary acts, all the world pursues."])

- This is where the aristocratic principle of nature, namely of race, is apparent in all levels of human existence and is of high potency.
