The Mystic Trumpeter - Part 1

Band leader, composer, trumpeter, and jazz musician Jerry Marshall wrote the music for this concert after discovering Walt Whitman's poem "The Mystic Trumpet." The performance includes a reading of the poem by the actor John Felix, singing by jazz vocalist Lysanne Lyons, and noted musicians from the University of Miami School of Jazz. The poem drew Jerry's attention not only because he was a trumpet player, but also because he had a deep and committed mystical life himself. He began channeling, unbidden, the voices of numerous spirits and ancestors in the the mid-1980s.
