DF2010 Tutorial - The Basics (Part 1)

Bringing you part 1 of the Dwarf Fortress tutorial.

Just run Dwarf Fortress.exe and things should be good to go. You can change your settings by opening up "data/init/init.txt".

If you are not using Windows, things get a bit more complicated. You're going to want to download Dwarf Fortress 0.31.12, install Pheobus' PNG graphic set, and extract the save file from the Windows download. If somebody could do that and give me the link, that would be great, otherwise I will get my VM going soon enough.

My woodcutter in your save won't quit fishing! Is there something else I can do to force him to cut wood?

@tfine80 Sure, part 5 covers migrants and changing labors. Your wood cutter really should stop fishing, but you can either disable his fishing labor or tell somebody else to be a woodcutter. If you still can't cut wood, your probably didn't designate it properly.

whenever i make a stockpile my dwarves get stuck on it endlessly complaining about nto being able to put things into it and not doing anything else

Tip for people: cats adopt people, and this can cause you not to be able to slaughter them later on if you need meat or your frame rate is failing because of the cats. Instead get ferrets, as they do the same things as cats and you can kill them easy. (turkeys are also better at fighting then guard dogs.)
